New report examines effects nationwide of preschool on kids' development University of California Berkeley

A new report released this month by researchers at the University of California Berkeley and Stanford University found that preschool attendance has negative effects on the social and emotional development of children, effects that were most strongly seen in children from better-off-families. Co-author of the study, UC Berkeley child development research director Margaret Bridges, expressed concern, "Cognitive benefits are great, but we have to pay heed to what's going on with kids emotionally and socially."

Partnership for Children Survey

“In December of 2003, Time Magazine reported on the consequences of negative emotional and social problems among young children.  In Time’s report, the child-advocacy group Partnership for Children survey showed that 93 percent of 39 schools responding said kindergartners today "'have more emotional and behavioral problems than were seen just five years ago." A majority of day-care centers, which host the tiniest tots, revealed that "incidents of rage and anger" have increased over the past three years.  Time’s reporter further quotes the survey leader as explaining, “We’re talking about children--a 3-year-old in one instance--who will take a fork and stab another child in the forehead. We’re talking about a wide range of explosive behaviors, and it’s a growing problem.”

American Educational Research Journal Study

This study found that the social harm persists through third grade, regardless of how well caregivers work with preschoolers and that social harm resulting from too much preschool or day care translates into "poorer work habits and poorer social skills through third grade." The findings were not affected by the quality of teacher-student interaction during preschool.

The central issue of day care is often framed to pit conservatives against liberals, working moms against stay-at-home moms, and feminists against traditional families. But the real conflict, as Robertson argues in this book, is between all parents and the day care establishment--a multimillion-dollar lobby with a vested interest in the expansion of subsidized day care services. Robertson reveals how this establishment works to increase its power and silence it critics. Researchers who point to a correlation between aggression among children and too much non-maternal care have seen their work vilified. Meanwhile, some scholars have disputed the obvious: that the mother-child bond is crucial to early childhood development. The day care lobby keeps pouring more money into elections, and politicians offer more subsides for commercial day care--while parents ask for policy options that would help them stay home with their children. This book is a brave and thoughtful book about a contentious debate whose outcome will have profound consequences for our children and our social future.
